When (and how) to repot your verdyva

Verdyva plants arrive with room to grow, so repotting is a someday task, not a day-one one. But every thriving plant eventually outgrows its home. Here is how to know, and how to move it gently.

The three telltale signs

• Roots circling the surface or peeking from the drainage zone.
• The reservoir empties much faster than it used to.
• Growth stalls in spring, when it should be taking off.

The gentle move

Choose a pot one size up — no more. Water lightly the day before, slide the root ball out, loosen the outer roots with your fingers, and settle it at the same depth in fresh, airy potting mix. Fill the reservoir and let the plant rest out of direct sun for a week.

Best timing

Early spring, just as days lengthen: the plant repairs its roots fastest then. Avoid repotting in flower or in deep winter unless there is an emergency.
