How self-watering pots actually work

The reservoir and the wick
Beneath the root zone sits a water reservoir. A wicking column of soil connects it to the roots, and capillary action does the rest: the soil draws up moisture only as it dries, so the roots drink at their own pace.
Why roots love it
Roots need both water and air. Because the soil is never flooded from above, air pockets stay open — the plant gets steady moisture and steady oxygen. That combination is why verdyva plants grow so evenly.
Your entire routine
- Check the level indicator when you walk by.
- When it reads low — about once a month — pour water into the fill hole.
- Every few months, water once from the top to rinse the soil.
