Large monstera plant in a white ceramic pot with dramatic leaf shadows

Monstera care, from first leaf to full fenestration

The Monstera Deliciosa is the plant that made a generation fall in love with greenery — and for good reason. Give it a few basics and it rewards you with leaf after leaf, each more dramatic than the last.

The light it actually wants

In the wild, monsteras climb trees beneath a canopy. Translate that indoors: bright, indirect light. A metre or two from an east or west window is ideal. Direct summer sun scorches the leaves; deep shade slows the splits.

Watering without thinking about it

In a verdyva self-watering pot, monstera care is one gesture: refill the reservoir when the indicator drops, about once a month. The roots pull moisture as they need it — which is exactly how this plant likes to drink: steadily, never soggy.

About those aerial roots

The woody arms reaching into the air are not a problem — they are ambition. Tuck them back into the pot, guide them onto a moss pole, or leave them be. Never cut them off wholesale; they feed the climb.

When do the splits appear?

  • Young leaves start whole — that’s normal.
  • Fenestrations appear from the fifth or sixth leaf onwards, with good light.
  • More light (still indirect) = more and deeper splits.
  • Wipe leaves monthly so they can breathe and shine.

That’s the whole secret: bright corner, monthly refill, a little patience. The drama takes care of itself.
